Course Objectives: English 250 familiarizes students with the long tradition of erotic writing in the West. It will enhance their awareness of the inextricable links between language and the erotic, hospital writing and sex, generic reading and seduction. Students will gain a broad understanding of the kinds of erotic writing, contexts in which it emerges, and means of analyzing it. The course will expand students’ understanding of different forms of eroticism as well as different forms of writing. Students will gain familiarity with the conventions of erotic writing, and learn to identify when those conventions are being ironized or repurposed to new effects. Students will acquire basic literary critical skills and learn about more sophisticated approaches to the study of literature as well. Through individual and group assignments they will practice these skills and build their abilities to read cultural texts carefully.
