Poesia/Theoria 201701

Welcome to the main page for Français 580 – also running as English 505 and CSPT 500/600 - at the University of Victoria. This year the focus is on modernist literary works, find film, click and Theory. Our basic premise is that many contemporary theorists write about modernism in large part because modernist artists were already theorists avant la lettre. They broached many of the key topics taken up by Theory around the turn of the twenty-first century, and did so through means that thinkers such as Gilles Deleuze, Julia Kristeva, Jacques Derrida, Marguerite Duras, and Giorgio Agamben also pursued. And, if modernism is therefore always-already theoretical, we contend, so Theory is in key ways fundamentally modernist. Much theoretical writing of the last 50 years is essentially modernist in its representational and rhetorical strategies, and indeed relies upon the fusion of experimental form and innovative content just as modernism did. The course is structured around pairings of cultural productions (novels, films, verse) with theoretical texts. The lines between poesia and theoria will be blurred throughout.

The course is team taught by Dr. Emile Fromet de Rosnay (French) and Dr. Stephen Ross (English). The instructor of record for the course is Dr. de Rosnay. This course first ran in the fall term of 2015, and is being re-launched with significantly new material in the spring term of 2017. Just below you’ll find links to all the key information you’ll need to navigate the course.
