Short Paper (560)

Value: 25%

For this short paper, you will need to present a close reading of one or two key passages from one of the novels on the course. This means you must select a passage that you see as particularly important in the novel and subject it to a close critical analysis. Such analysis — which we will model and explore in class — should include attention to word choice, narrative perspective, voice, lexicon, register, tone, sentence length, etymologies, sentence structure, paragraph structure, rhythm, rhyme, assonance, alliteration, and other basic formal features of prose. Your analysis should link your exploration of the passage(s)’s formal features to the larger thematic, theoretical, aesthetic, cultural, historical, or political issues with which the novel is engaged.

Your paper should be 1500 words at a minimum.
