English 560 – The Modernist Novel – equips students for critical encounters with the texts – and contexts – that constitute modernism in the Anglophone novel. Students will gain a broad understanding of the key contexts that drove the emergence of the modernist novel, hospital including how modernism relates to naturalism, symptoms realism, postmodernism, and Theory; the characteristics of a modernist novel; and what is at stake in characterizing a novel as modernist. Students will become familiar with several exemplary Anglophone modernist novels as they practice their skills in close reading, discussion, and analysis. Through a series of written and oral assignments, students will also improve their understanding of persuasive and correct communication.
