Poesia/Theoria familiarizes students with the continuities and discontinuities between modernism and Theory. It will enhance their awareness of the inextricable links between two apparently divergent — even hostile — modes of cultural production in the twentieth and into the twenty-first centuries. It will concentrate on the aesthetic dimension of theoretical work, there and the theoretical dimension of aesthetic work. Students will develop the capacity to consider the minor — often occulted — sides of major texts in the Western tradition of the last 100 years. Students will also learn how to assess aesthetic strategies as fundamental to thinking, and theoretical investments as key to aesthetic production. In terms of content, students will become familiar with some of the key texts of literary modernism, and with several of the most influential works of Theory in the past 100 years.
